Water management at processing plants

Australia's meat processing industry is working hard to effectively manage water use. Through changing practices, processing plants are reducing the amount of water they use.

The industry is also focused on finding uses for effluent that is rich in organic compounds and nutrients as well as managing waste water more effectively.

Innovations such as AAA-rated nozzles for washbasins, timer devices, and improved heating and cooling systems are making Australian processing plants world leaders in water management.

Increased water efficiency

A study undertaken by Meat and Livestock Australia in 2003 found that water use across 10 meat processing sites had decreased by approximately 11% since 1998. Increased water efficiency was attributed to water saving innovations such as motion sensors and employee education.

Only four of 10 sites in the study recycled water. The main restriction to recycling water in the plants is the governments Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) requirements for export products.

World's best practice

In one Meat & Livestock Australia funded study, simple water-saving changes at a processing plant created one of the most water efficient plants in the world on a per head basis. Changes included installing:

  • AAA-rated water nozzles for wash basins
  • Timer devices to control water application
  • Improved heating and cooling systems

Best practice guidelines

Meat & Livestock Australia continues to assist meat processing plants to improve water use performance. Initiatives to improve water use efficiency are available in a manual for processing plants, available on the Meat & Livestock Australia website.

Managing liquid waste

The industry generates large quantities of effluent that is rich in organic compounds and nutrients, and meat processing plants employ the best tools available to manage waste water effectively.

Effective strategies for waste water management include:

  • Installing cleaner technology
  • Minimising wastewater generation
  • Installing efficient and effective wastewater treatment processes
  • Good management practice
